Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Bombs Away (Phil Style)

Riding home this afternoon had the China/Rider from Golden Hall blasting in the car, just hypnotized by Phil's explosive work throughout, culminating in a devastating carpet bombing of the entire crowd, leaving the everyone stunned and breathless. This got me thinking about my favorite Phil Bombs. The first, other than that C/R finale, is the massive blast he lets off during the intro to The Other One in Cape Cod 10/27/79. Curious in putting together a list of Phil's all-time greatest Bombs. Afterall, who doesn't like a good Bunker Buster from time to time?.

I love 'em, but from the name you gave this thread, I was thinking you might start a discussion about that song from Heaven Help the Fool.

I knew I could count on you to respond quickly. Thanks for clearing things up. And was that some kind of a backhanded compliment? Either thank you or go piss up a rope, whichever is appropriate. But to answer the original question, I'll leave it to somebody else to compile a list of Great Moments In Leshdom. I'm a wealth of information, but unfortunately, none of it is of any use.

If I had a dime for everytime someone has said "Why the hell do you know that?", I wouldn't be here talking with you peons. It is my experience that Heads in general have a tendency to be filled with vast amount of useless knowledge. Well, useless to non-Heads that is. I mean, who wouldn't want to know how many times Jerry wore a Hanes t-shirt vs. Jockey and how that affected his chord progression in Althea? Not me, boy.

Piss up a rope? I like that one.

My mom had a million of 'em. Shinny up a tree was another way of saying the same thing. Too bad I never asked her what the exact definition of shinny was, but I assume it was something one would prefer not doing.

10-27-79 is definitely a special Phil bomb show with Phil doing 3 different "bomb" intros to The Other One.
As for personal favorites that haven't yet been mentioned....

9-11-73 Phil does a very nice solo between Dark Star and Dew

12-9-81 During the jam in I Know You Rider has Phil just ripping some awesome licks

2-21-82, the intro for NFA has Phil dropping multiple bombs and as NFA is ending, he once again does multiple unique bass licks. Also the end solo of Stella Blue has Phil and Jerry playing off each other very nicely.

Meanwhile, not one single head here has posted one single Phil bomb...

SDH asked for some Phil Bombs, Cliff thinks you all are pathetic!

Still want to patent the CLIFFSTERs T-shirts,

See, that's the beauty of our system: if you preorder you don't get squat cause that requires first person interaction and we only deal with people in the third person.

Good news! Spoke to chief spokesperson in charge of gift giving for die hard fans, and since I used a third person, HE was receptive! Small token of appreciation in the mail to you. The ALL CAPS representative hopes you enjoy--and he notes that though it may not be up to the highest trading standards vis a vis packaging and sharpie marking, it is nonetheless a great two disk show!

Enjoy.

Most people in talking about Cape Cod talk about the Dancin>Franklins, and rightly so. But the He's Gone>Other One is an absolute masterpiece of epic proportions with Phil just exploding a couple of atomic blasts that threaten to blow your speakers. THIS IS A MUST HAVE SHOW!!!

I like Phil's solo transition from Dark Star into Eyes at the 2/15/73 show. 4:20 of Phil dropping bombs and showing why he's one of the best in the business.

I think most openings to The Other One would work, because Phil always seemed like he would try and get as loud as possible. I especially like the 5/25/77 show where Phil drops the bombs at the beginning of TOO after Drums and after Wharf Rat.
